Was Louis Riel Guilty Of Treason I believe that Louis Riel is guilty of treason. Riel, Louis Riel has been called many names, he has been called a Prophet, a Statesman, a scoundrel, a hero, a madman, a visionary, a hero, but Louis Riel is best described a traitor, he has betrayed Canada in many ways. If passed, Bill C-417 will reverse Riels conviction for high treason. Riel ordered a man named Thomas Scott to be killed and organized a rebellion that caused the loss of dozens of lives, in order to become a territorial leader. Indeed Riel spent most of his adult life in Canada, the United States, seeking political intrigue. Eventually he was executed for his many crimes and the endless turmoil he caused with the Canadian government. That sentence may appear harsh today, but it was no harsher than Scotts execution or the dozens lost in the Riel rebellion: life itself was hard then. The punishment was meted out accordingly, and believed to be very fair at the time. Even though Louis Riel did not want Bloodshed and stay ed away from rebelling against the government for most of his adult life he did not keep it that way so Louis Riel is indeed still guilty of treason. This is true because Louis Riel started rebellions, and was responsible for levying war against the Canadian government which is treason. Louis Riel also fled to the U.S and conspired with the president to start war with the government which is also treason. Louis Riel is guilty in many ways of treason. Riel did not touch a gun and did not kill anyone but he is responsible for the dozens of lives lost in the Riel rebellion and for the execution of Thomas Scott. After all did he not court Marshall Scott and from his peoples vote, 2 only 2 of the seven could do what Riel could not, only 2 of Riels people had the courage to raise their hands, and denounce the Scott execution cold blooded murder. Scott wasnt guilty of treason for two reasons one, he had no government to be treasonous against, and never in the criminal code does it say do not be racist to your government. It does say form an intention to start war with the government, or use force to overthrow the government, Scott was innocent and Riel should have known it, and it is not the killing of Thomas Scott which made Riel guilty it is what that lead to which was rebellions, a provisional government, and many other acts of the crime treason. Save our country from this wicked government by taking arms if necessary Louis Riel. According to the criminal code of Canada paragraph 46 section 1 a through 2c treason is someone who a) uses force or violence for the purpose of overthrowing the government of Canada or a province. The North West Rebellion is a perfect example of this, ¦ Riel formed a provisional government at Batoche in order to wring concessions from Ottawa by force, if necessary does this sound like a man who cares for his government, or a man that will use his government to get what he wants. One week later, the Mà ©tis clashed with the North-West Mounted Police on Beardys Reserve near Duck Lake, by this attack from the Metis people led by none other than Louis Riel, and in section 46 2b on the criminal code of Canada it says levies war against Canada or does any act preparatory thereto- by acting and rebelling though it was only few Mounties it is still part of the Canadian government, and by god it was the very first step on Louis road of rebellion on the Canadian government, so by rebelling they are levying some sort of war on Canada which is a form of treason, isnt it. Riel decided to make his stand at Batoche, a strategy that ultimately sealed the fate of the Mà ©tis and lost any chance of prolonging the conflict- the stand Louis riel is taking a stand to overthrow the Canadian government therefore committing treason, and he is in every way guilty of treason. The North-West Field Force, momentarily stunned by an ambush at Fish Creek in late April 1885, swooped downed on Batoche on May 9 and easily overran the defenders three days later. The next six weeks were largely anticlimactic, as Indian leaders and their followers who had been implicated in the troubles surrendered to Canadian authorities. another section says that You shall not start (Riel was the leader so he started it) or assist armed forces (Metis using Nails, Stones Sticks, cannons guns) against whom Canadian Forces are engaged in hostilities (Riel + Metis), whether or not a state of war exists betwee n Canada and the country whose forces they are. The Metis and Riel are doing this they are starting war, and convincing others to join which is also an act of treason so Time travelling back to the Riel era and undoing Riels hanging through simple historical revisionism implies that someone else should pay the price for killing riel, now innocent. In other words, it calls our entire justice system into question, and too be fair and just, if you pardon Riel you must pardon, everyone else who has been charged with treason, and take a look at them, and by doing this it is implying we can get away with rebelling against our government, in the way Riel did. Maybe at first Louis Riels Provisional Government was used to protect the Metis and maybe because the term provisional means temporary and it was only used so the Metis could negotiate with the Canadian government to become a part of Canada but it was later an excuse to rebel against the Canadian government. At a meeting inside of a church in Batoche after a priest  which had told the Metis people Riel that I refuse to give the sacrament to anyone who participates in a rebellion against the Canadian government Riels reaction was assaulting the priest and holding a meeting, at that very meeting Riel uttered this quote I propose we set up a provisional government and take up arms to defend our right to do so! By saying this Riel is saying that hell use his government which was legal and use it to commit illegal crime treason by taking up arms and fighting for their rights and possibly overthrow three governments, and all three of those points are against the Canadian criminal code. So after this meeting occurred it was all downhill and became from harmless to harmful and treason. So by saying this is levying war against Canada and conspiring with the Metis to take up arms against the Canadian government, which both are Treason. Bill C-417 should not be passed because Mr. Riel does not deserve a second chance to live and be a hero, he was given chances and he blew them. Throughout his life Riel had formed a provisional government, started many rebellions, killed innocent men, and had fled to the U.S. When he murdered Thomas Scott, he was in trouble and he done wrong and he knew it, and he wasnt ready to be accountable for his actions so he fled to the U.S, if he knew it was the right thing to do and felt accountable for his actions he would have stayed in Canada and fought for his cause. Does this sound like a strong leader? Is this a leader who would stand up and never abandon his people? No it sounds like a traitor to his government and his people, only a guilty man would leave his own country and have the nerve to come back start rebellions, and run for a spot in parliament. The main reason why people think he is a hero is because he fought for the rights of his people and stand up for them, and by fleein g his people he did not stand up for them but he sat down. Yes throughout Riels earlier years he tried to avoid bloodshed and he did, he avoided fighting against the government, for a long time Riel had avoided killing anyone to avoid bloodshed but later in his life he started a rebellion with a man named Gabriel Dumont who was for bloodshed, and Dumont had been accountable for many Canadian deaths but lets not forget Dumonts leader and the one who organized the rebellions Riel. Louis Riel was one hundred per cent responsible for Dumont and his actions thus responsible for the blood shed he caused. Riel shouldve known Dumont was the man who wouldnt hesitate at chance to battle or capture, a person who was part of the Canadian Government I mean in a football game isnt it the quarterbacks job to call the plays and lead his team, so in the football game of The Metis vs. the Canadian Government Riel was the Quarter back and therefore responsible for the work of his defense man Dumont. Riel was there when Dumont was talking about ambushes, guerri lla style tactics, etc. Riel knew what Dumont wanted and went along with it, so Dumonts Bloodshed is also Louis bloodshed. I mean Riel couldve stopped him, yet when Riel sent him over to Mitchells store near Duck Lake to raid it, Gabriel couldnt resist starting battle; Mr. Riel knew Dumont was a violent man, toward the Canadian Government but still Riel sent Dumont out to a place near, where Mounties were located. By not giving Dumont his follower instructions not to start battle Riel is responsible for Dumonts Bloodshed and his treasonous acts against the Canadian Government, and by being responsible for others treason he is guilty of his own treason. We intend to fight for our freedom as a separate state from Canada In 1875 Mr. Riel was expelled from Canada for 5 years to the U.S and in these 5 years without the authorization of the Canadian government Riel went to acting U.S president Ulysses S. Grant to ask for money and protection. According to the criminal code of Canada without lawful authority can a person conspire with another person or ought to do something for a purpose prejudicial to the safety and defense of Canada. By going to Ulysses S. Grant Riel and asking him for money and protection he is preforming a treasonous act. At this same meeting Riel also says that I am convinced that I could raise a military force sufficient enough to compel the Canadian government to reconsider its relationship with the North West by saying this he is discussing his plan to raise a military force and levy war against Canada which is also part of treason. So by fleeing Canada to go to the President and discussing Riels plan to attack the Canadian government is treason in to ways, and then acting on the se plans in the North West resistance is completely treasonous. How could an insane person lead 700 people into a rebellion unless they were all insane? Louis may have been a traitor and a scoundrel but one thing that is true is he is very honest. At his trial Louis was a truthful man and would not plead insane because he was considerate as well. In fact President John A. Macdonald said because there was doubt about Riels sanity, I delayed the execution until November 16th and had him examined by three doctors. They all agreed that hes not crazy. Three doctors examined one man, he was said to be diagnosed with megalomania, and megalomania is Delusional belief of superiority, Delusions of greatness, Delusions about ones own power Delusions about ones own importance. Louis Riel envisioned himself as a prophet, according to the dictionary; a prophet is a man who speaks for god or a deity, or by divine inspiration or a person who practices divination. Riel saw himself as a prophet of God not a person that is superior, great or is any more important than anybody else on Gods green earth. So not one, not two but the three doctors are right , Riel in no way has any symptoms of megalomania; he does not see himself as great. Louis could not be insane anyway, instead of staying nice and safe in Montana, Riel gave up his safety for the Metis. During his trial, Riels lawyer thought the only way to get Riel out of this mess was for him to plead insanity, it was his lawyers decision to make him insane, he himself knowing he would be executed, Riel still did not agree, only a proud sane man would die to say he was just a sane leader. Riel is right how could an insane person lead 700 people into a rebellion unless they were all insane? If Louis Riel had not been apparently diagnosed with the single diagnosis of megalomania According to http://mwolk.com/blog/definition-of-insanity/ in general an insane person is a person who is not at all afraid of doing anything which might lead to drastic problems for him/her in the future, near the beginning of the Riel era  Riel had asked his men to stop the bloodshed and be loyal to the Q ueen, so even though he started rebellions and broke many laws mostly TREASON, Riel did try to avoid things that would be dreadful to himself and the Metis. So Riel was not insane and therefore was right to be punished for the treason he caused in the rebellions, and the turmoil he gave to the government. Riel didnt Father Confederation; he fought those who did. In comparison with the constructive minds of his generation, Riel was an anomaly. Since he was certainly not a hero to everyone, in no case should we commemorate his misdeeds by erecting a statue of him on Parliament Hill. That would be an insult to the memory of the soldiers who fought and died fighting Riels army and defending the cherished rights we associate with that same Parliament Hill. No person advocating or engaging in armed rebellion against Canadas democratic processes should be so honoured. To do so would be to elevate anarchy and civil disobedience to statesmanship. In short, Riel did not have the full support of his people, let alone Ruperts Land that he needed to create his own territory. Instead, he used arms and force, those ancient non-democratic methods, resulting in death and terror. He was accordingly confronted by force for his crimes, lost and hung. So by revising History, you are not condemning Louis R iel you are condemning Canada, he fought against those who made Canada, and for that alone, for being a bump on the road of what Canada is today, Louis Riel Deserved the death of hangings and more, in the end Louis Riel broke every part of the Criminal Code subsection Treason and high treason  [v]  except for causing bodily harm to her Majesty. In final conclusion to make Louis Riel innocent is making our government guilty and they did not break any single law in Riels lifetime so Riel is indeed guilty of treason.

Twelve O’Clock High Introduction to the paper’s subject, and primary objectives: General information regarding the topic of this paper:  The purpose of this paper is to identify and contrast the different styles of leadership exhibited by two characters found in the 1949 movie Twelve O’Clock High starring Gregory Peck as General Savage, Army Air Forces general. Based on a true story, Twelve O’Clock High is a inspirational account of the highly dangerous precision daylight bombing missions carried out by US Army Air Force’s 918th Bomber Group in England during the last part of World War II. In the beginning of the movie the squadron is commanded by general Davenport. It is very clear that General Davenport’s main concern is the wellbeing of his men. He obviously had developed close interpersonal relationships. The men of the squadron were completely devoted towards Davenport and they trusted any decision that he would make. General Davenport’s affection for his men comes to interfere with his ability to lead them. The squadron suffers heavy losses to planes and heavier losses to soldiers. One instance that clearly demonstrates Davenport’s incapability to uphold his responsibilities as the leader is when he jeopardizes the well being of the entire squadron by ignoring protocol and flying out of formation in the attempt to save one plane. When it becomes apparent to Davenport’s superiors that his emotional feelings have become an obstacle to his effectively leading the squadron they relieve him. General Savage who is ordered to take over the underachieving bomber group experiencing heavy losses because of poor technique and lack of focus. Savage takes a kind of tough love approach, holding his men to the highest standards. Savage makes the point that the ultimate objection of the squadron is to successfully complete the assigned missions. Throughout the movie Savage constantly makes it absolutely clear to the squadron that no one individual’s wellbeing will be placed ahead of the entire team and the success of the team. Initially the changing of the preceding General dispirits the squadron. They felt that General Savage was uncompassionate considering the men as nothing more then numbers that were dispensable at his convenience. After several missions that were marked by a remarkable turnaround in success the man eventually come... ...rganization this movie offers a very concrete example for people in authority to follow. It can also be applied in situations where there has been a recent change in authority. According to the book leaders that have recently entered a position of authority should be more task specific in the way they interact with employees. This will clear up some of the ambiguity associated with the needs of the new leader to the employees. Reasons why Savage succeeded where Davenport failed: Differences in primary motivation: Davenport was primarily motivation was the establishing and maintaining of close interpersonal relationships with his followers. While Savage, on the other hand, was primarily motivated by task accomplishment. As in this type of situation Savage’s style is more effective. However, even though Davenport failed in this situation I feel that his leadership style has the potential to be highly successful in an environment that are more favorable. In this example Savage was faced with a crises. In periods of crisis leaders identify problems and implement solutions tend to be the most effective. Clearly Savage does a better job of making his expectations clear.

Denotation of the Word “Character”

According to Webster's dictionary, character is defined as: a person in a play or novel; distinctive trait; behavior typical of a person or group; moral strength; reputation; status; individual being†. It is this last denotation of the word â€Å"Character† that this chapter deals with: the concept of â€Å"individuality† or â€Å"individual being† and how that in turn builds a person i.e. the Self. This chapter focuses on the strong characteristics possessed by Blanche Haggard and Princess Sasha from Absent in the Spring and Grannie and Peter Maitland from Unfinished Portrait to study the aspect of the Self which builds. A person's individuality can come out through various positive aspects but this chapter analytically studies the characters under four major aspects of self-actualization, the striving towards health, the quest for identity and autonomy, the yearning for excellence by finding success in their own terms rather than being defined by the society. There's so much more to creating a real character than choosing physical attributes and personality traits. The most memorable characters stay in the reader's mind because they have touched the emotions of the reader and become real people. While molding such a character, the author never stops at the stereotypical basics- but goes a step ahead. That is exactly what Christie has done to her characters chosen for this study. These characters do not fall under the general standard which the reader can so often predict or expect. The first character, Blanche Haggard stands as an analogy to strengthen the claim that the Self is built as by way of finding success in one's own terms rather than being defined by the society. Blanche Haggard, Joan's old school friend whom she hasn't seen for over 15 years, is a well-bred, high-spirited woman, who has changed a lot over the years. Joan looks at Blanche as someone who has had a pathetic life. However, Joan's perspective of Blanche is biased. This also highlights the fact that not all narrations are â€Å"likeable† or honest. In the case of Blanche Haggard, her true character is revealed from a little bit of truth from Joan's perspective but mostly through her own dialogues. Joan's way of looking at Blanche is always with the adjective â€Å"Poor† as a prefix to her name, which is a false notion that she has painted of Blanche. In her personal prayers that night after her encounter with Blanche, Joan prays, â€Å"God-thank thee-poor Blanche-thank thee that I am not like that- great mercies- all my blessings- especially not like Poor Blanche- Poor Blanche-really dreadful-all her own fault- of course dreadful- quite a shock- thank God- I am different- Poor Blanche† Blanche, however, is an optimist. She has had three husbands, and married to the fourth at present. She is seen to be someone who takes life as it comes, learns to let go and accepts what's negatively thrown at her and use it as a stepping stone to build her Self. To further prove this, one can observe that throughout her dialogue with Joan, Blanche's confidence is something that constantly comes to the forefront. According to Joan, Blanche presented a deplorable appearance but Blanche does not seem to mind. To her, external appearances don't matter for she has defined success in her own terms. To her, an attractive appearance is the least of her worries for she has a man who loves her for who she is and if he doesn't (in the case of her previous marriages) she moves on and doesn't dwell in the shambles of a broken relationship. Her looks needn't affect her anymore, for to her, success is living a happy life. She says from experience,â€Å"Oh well, that's the way of the world. You quit when you ought to stick, and you take on a thing that you'd better leave alone; one minute life's so lovely you can hardly believe it's true – and immediately after that you're going through a hell of misery and suffering! When things are going well you think they'll last forever- and they never do- and when you're down under you think you'll never come up and breathe again. That's what life is, isn't it?†It is quite evident that Blanche says this out of familiarity. She starts by saying that this is the way of world for she has been through the many ups and downs in life. She had quit once, but fought back up to her feet, started to let of go of things that hurt her if she kept holding on to them (her broken marriages for instance). She describes how people picture life to be perfect and blissful only to be faced by hardship and suffering that makes them hit rock bottom. This shows that Blanche is someone who isn't afraid of reality. She faces the actuality of her life and doesn't flee from the truth. She has had her share of bitter experiences from the past when she narrates and describes the many other men in her life. There's Harry, a bad lot yet good looking; Tom, who didn't amount to much; Johnnie, who was good while it lasted (which means she keeps changing her men when she knows it's time to move on- happy go lucky) and Gerald, who wasn't good either, but that's what made her fond of him. A woman seeks for a man who is her equal; someone who can challenge her and be a rebel at times. Blanche's inclination towards such men is proof that she herself is one. She does not regret any of her life choices for she has already done so and now knows what to look out for. She is only attracted to men, who are different like herself. They aren't up to any good, but that's what makes her fond of them. All this comes as a shock to Joan. She feels that it was â€Å"an unsavory catalogue of men†. But Joan's way of defining success is narrow when compared to Blanche who is very much broad-minded and independent. In one such instance, she asks a rhetoric question, to make a statement rather than to get an answer: â€Å"And when you're down under you think you'll never come up and breathe again. That's what life is, isn't it?† Blanche doesn't stay stagnant in the pitfalls of life but she comes back up more matured than ever to tackle any situation at hand. She had assumed that one could never come up and breathe, but it isn't the case for her and her life stands testimony to that. In one instance, Joan describes Blanche saying, â€Å"looks years older†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦could be more than 48†. However, this does not indicate her physical appearance of being old but it metaphorically indicates her level of maturity through the years. The fact that she doesn't look her actual age but looks much older than she really is comes here as a sign of mellowness, rather than being old. She has experienced much in life that she doesn't look her age, at present. Even when Joan feels sorry for her (as society does) she immediately says that she shouldn't waste her sympathy on her. She is not one to settle in her â€Å"misfortunes† as Joan would put it, but moves on and takes life as it comes again stressing the fact that she defines success in her own terms rather than how society sees it. â€Å"Don't waste your sympathies on me. I've had lots of fun† she says. Her self-assurance does not only make her carry herself differently but it also sticks to those around. For instance when, Blanche brings up the topic of Rodney â€Å"having a roving eye† or Joan's daughter, Barbara, not having a happy time at home and hence decided to be married off and gone, Joan is immediately influenced by this for she gives a second thought to the same. This clearly indicates Blanche's sureness in her opinions not only stays with her but also impacts those around her too. In one instance Joan thinks to herself, â€Å"What was it that Blanche had said?† Even if Joan sees Blanche differently, she still is impacted by what Blanche had to say. Blanche also doesn't worry about the way in which she is judged by others. Her self is built on the strong foundation of the truth she believes in about herself. She is appreciative in nature for she applauds Joan for how well she has brought up her family. This does not however mean that she doesn't have a satisfying life, but shows that she's learnt to see the good in others; their other side. She's seen it all and thus has a positive take on life. She is of the idea that â€Å"Come what may, I shall face it and come out successful†. Thus, Blanche Haggard, is a character whose ability to define success on her own terms, brings out her individuality which in turn builds her Self. Peter Maitland from Unfinished Portrait also falls under this category. Peter, who is Celia's best friend's brother, has a liking towards Celia and they eventually fall in love but do not get married. However, from what the reader deciphers, Peter is of an extraordinary character. He doesn't rush or hurry and takes everything in a sportive attitude. His motto is â€Å"Well, why spend your life rushing? Take it easy- enjoy yourself.† Peter's ability to calm himself down in a fast phased world is highly indicative of his character. In Celia's own words, Peter was â€Å"dear, easy going and sweet-tempered†. Like Blanche, he takes life as it comes and doesn't expect much in return either. Being a soldier in the army, Peter knows that life's full of unexpected circumstances; he knows what would be Celia's fate if she did marry him but he lets her be open-minded when it comes to moving on and finding someone else. Despite being the patriarch, he doesn't restrict Celia but let's her be independent in her choices. In his letter to Celia, he says, â€Å"I'd like you to live like a queen.† To him, letting people bloom in their own spaces and watching them grow is considered to be his true contentment. When Celia falls for Dermot (her husband), Peter takes it sportively. He congratulates Celia on her choice and wishes her well. To Peter, he defines success by not only being the reason for someone's happiness, but his happiness is also seeing those he loves be happy even if he is not the reason either. His Self is built to such an extent that he is able to face the loss of something that he holds dear. Thus both Blanche and Peter are striking examples of the Self which builds as a result of the positive traits which they possess. The second aspect to be studied to further strengthen the claim that the Self builds is the positive trait of Self-Actualization. The Oxford Dictionary defines Self-Actualization as, â€Å"the realization or fulfilment of one's talents and potentialities, especially considered as a drive or need present in everyone†. And that brings this study to the next character: Princess Sasha. Sasha's positive trait, is what makes her the apt example to fortify the claim that the Self builds. Studies show that if sociology is taken into play, then the character will influence not only the message but also the view the analysis must take of the message, particularly of messages which connote such meanings as ‘power' and ‘quality'. Sasha, who is clearly in a position of power has the upper hand in convincing the reader as well as Joan, that what she says is equal to the power she possesses. The way she carries herself, talks to others and treats her fellow passengers shows the Self which has built as a result of the positive trait of Self-Actualization. Just her opening lines indicate what sort of a person she is.â€Å"I apologize for this early morning intrusion. It is an iniquitously uncivilized hour for a train to leave, and I disturb your repose†¦..we shall not get on too badly on each other's nerves. It is but two days to Stamboul, and I am not difficult to live with. And if I smoke too much, you will tell me. But now I leave you to sleep†¦..again I say how sorry I am you have been disturbed†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦I see you are sympathetic- good- we shall get on together famously†In Sasha, one can see the realization of true potential and her talents have been well-groomed when further down in the n ovel, it is revealed that she can speak in more than eight languages. She is well-accomplished clearly denoting that she has imbibed an affirmative living. Despite being a princess, she has also practiced the art of humility. She doesn't think too high of herself in spite of her many accomplishments. She apologizes for intruding. She lets Joan know that if there is anything that makes Joan uncomfortable (Sasha's smoking for instance) she shouldn't keep it to herself but let Sasha know. This also indicates that Sasha is open to criticism and is sensitive to those around her. Someone who is Royal by birth, needn't stoop so low, let alone adopt for a public mode of transport. Sasha does not let pride take over her and that is seen as one of her positive traits and this reflects in the way she treats others. Her character results in the building up of another. This kind of thought about human behavior, which emphasizes the uniqueness of the individual, the importance of values and meaning, and the potential for self-direction and personal growth are what sums up the character of Sasha thus making her yet another example of the Self which builds. Grannie, the third most prominent entity from Unfinished Portrait is a striking example of the Self which builds. Determination, independence despite her age, the aspect of striving towards health and the strong will to live are the positive traits observed in this character. Introduced to the reader as an eighty year old woman, Grannie is astonishingly brisk and sharp that the activities she does and her age don't correlate. One of the very first reasons to validate this is the fact that Grannie being eighty still has authority over her household. She walks with her â€Å"large bunch of keys clanking† and this immediately paints a picture of a woman who is in control over things. She is in possession of the keys which also stresses her power. In Celia's description about Grannie she says,â€Å"Grannie was a very handsome lady†¦in figure she was majestically stout with a pronounced bosom and stately hips. She wore dresses of velvet.†Grannie's appearance also adds to her character. Despite her age, she is still strong built and this gives her an added air of confidence. Something about her description sounds royal, with words like â€Å"majestic† and â€Å"dresses of velvet†. The Self in her has built through the ages and this is obviously proved when Celia looks up to her grandmother more than she does to her own mother. The absence of the male entity in Grannie's life (i.e her husband) also adds to the independence which she portrays. Like Blanche, she has had three husbands previously, all of them dead now. With the differentiation strategy of JLR Tata tries to attract high-income customers while with Tata Motors it attracts low- and mid-income purchaser. BMW are one of the best examples of a strategy of product differentiation, as far as Michael Porter’s generic strategies are concerned. They offer differentiated automobiles (and motorcycles as well). BMW succeeds in satisfying their customers’ needs and wants at a high level. By desensitizing the costumers of the vehicles prices, BMW creates a substantial competitive advantage. Thus, higher prices than competitive products are either less perceived by costumers or ignored, which allows for creating a higher margin. BMW’s products benefit from innovative engineering capabilities as well as from huge investments made in basic research. The long tradition of BMW in the automobile industry and their technological leadership strengthen their competitive advantage. In addition to that, BMW employs a strong supervision of quality in every kind of process. Corporate quality managers and internal auditors file frequent and detailed control reports and continuously improve quality standards. BMW employs a strong coordination among functions in R. Results from their own think tank projects are used for various purposes. BMW offers myriad amenities such as high basic salaries, an attractive bonus system and non-monetary advantages, in order to attract highly skilled labor, especially scientists and engineers. BMW ensures very high quality standards and maintains a strong brand image and reputation as a high-class car manufacturer, by making these substantial investments in the production of cars and motorcycles. For BMW as a big global company, it is a demanding task to manage all the functions of marketing, finance, operations, human resources, and especially research and development in an efficient way. As far as BMW’s international financial strategy is concerned, one can say that they attempt to diversify risk to a degree that still enables them to benefit from positive changes in the environment. Currency risks are hedged by different locations in Europe, the U. S, and Asia. The company is funded by via different bond types with a diversified maturity profile. BMW’s marketing strategy is regio-centric. Their way of promoting and advertising varies across Europe, the U. S. , and Asia. For instance in Europe, the ecoefficiency of the engines is highlighted. Whereas in the U. S. the power and agility of cars is stressed. The human resource strategy can be described as well balanced and sustainable, because BMW offers several programs for employees that help them to prepare their international career and ensure their position in their home country even before they left it. The R strategy of BMW is global and characterized by a constant transfer and exchange of knowledge. For instance the development of its SUV cars takes place in the U. S to a high degree because this market segment is particularly big there. Comparison of Managerial Approaches and Strategies Derived In terms of both their general approach to management and their corporate, and business level strategies BMW and Tata can be described as vastly different. BMW pursues a clear strategy of product differentiation with sophisticated technology and service employed. Without any doubt, Tata’s corporate strategy of unrelated diversification has the advantages of easy access to capital, a balanced portfolio, synergy effects as well as the reduction of bus iness cycle vulnerability. The BMW Group is diversified in related businesses, comprising different car brands and the own brand of motorcycles. From the functional perspective one can say that BMW’s main focus lies on operations and research development. Tata Motors’ functional strategies are aligned to seek for an overall low-cost position. Tactical Goals and Plans Tata Motors focus at the tactical level to develop strict goals, which the middle management has to accomplish. In the fiscal year 2008, deliveries to customers went down by 5. 8%. BMW has to stabilize its sales and ensure a growth of sales of at least 4% during the coming 12 months. Its net profit went down to â‚ ¬330 million. BMW has to aim for the target of more than â‚ ¬3,000 million during the coming five years, which will be broken down to an increase of the net profit during the coming 12 months of at least 50 percent. As we figured out, the emerging markets do not only offer great growth potential but can also help to hedge the general volatility of sales. Thus, the markets of Russia and China have to be focused more by conducting extensive marketing campaigns. Particularly, the new X6 M and the 5GT have to be promoted to achieve double-digit growth rates there. Control Framework Tata has implemented several aspects of strategic control to oversee its strategic development and analyze the progresses of strategic implementation. The company has implemented a corporate risk management, which has the objectives to check systematically whether the premises on which the strategy is based are still valid (environmental and industry factors) as well as managing a so-called special alert control. It provides a systematic approach to addressing complex, intersecting requirements of compliance. BMW employs a Total Quality Management (TQM) approach for both the quality of the main production units (and the supply chain) as well as for the service quality, which is directly targeted at the customer. As they are pursuing a strategy of differentiation, constant monitoring of quality and continuous improvements are necessary in order to meet high customer expectations. The quality of BMW’s end products highly depends on the quality, which is delivered by suppliers. Thus, the following control system is employed: Level 1 Problem discussion, Level 2 Problem Situation at the supplier location, Level 3 Supplier Support. Escalation is used when target deviations in core or support processes cannot be resolved solely by those concerned. Comparison of Competitive Advantages and Managerial Recommendations Tata has been able to gain competitive advantage through global efficiencies. It achieves location efficiencies by concentrating facilities in low-cost countries. By building factories to serve more and more foreign countries (especially emerging markets), it achieves economies of scale. BMW also achieves economies of scale by drawing its supply from relatively small numbers of big global companies. Thereby they achieve great bargaining power and can exert great influence. As BMW’s product portfolio is broader than Tata’s, with nine different car series and several sub categories plus motorcycles, Tata (as a cost leader) benefits more from economies of scale. Through its corporate strategy of a broad portfolio it enjoys economies of scope. With this international strategic approach Tata has been very successful in emerging markets where its low-cost, low-price portfolio meets a high demand of a rising mid-income population. Similarities can be found in a different segment of this field: the high-income population of Asia and Eastern Europe. Moreover, Tata has been recognized as a successful example of creating synergies and economies of scope through its diversification strategy. Albeit, regarding the corporate strategy we clearly recommend to spin-off marginal businesses like retail, telecom or hotels. The conglomerate should focus more on its heavy industry business units like engineering, steel, cars and energy. The synergy effects are greater and Tata would be able to allocate its resources to core competencies. As BMW pursues a strategy of related diversification, such spin-offs are not necessary. Although they are involved in several joint-ventures (i. e. China together with Brilliance), BMW could have a stronger focus on strategic alliances in the German domestic market. We propose them to act in concert with Mercedes Benz in terms of their high-price, high-quality cars series in order to make use of technology transfer and bundle research and development activities, particularly in the fields of passenger safety and eco-efficiency. Concerning the business level, Tata Motors should follow its low-cost strategy in emerging markets where it faces great opportunities to compete with its portfolio. It has great chances to gain huge market shares and use economies of scale. JLR should pursue its differentiation strategy for the premium sector. Tata should foster know-how transfers and reduce overhead costs by concentrating R and certain production processes between the business units. In the long-run we recommend Tata Motor to implement 11 TATA MOTORS BMW INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FALL 2009 the strategic goal of changing its brand’s image in western markets from a cheap brand to an innovative, affordable brand. BMW has to maintain its strong brand image. As we could see from the past, the invention of the lower cost 1series did not interfere with the strategy of technology leadership and clear differentiation. Nonetheless, we recommend BMW to control prices more carefully, because Tata directly attacks them with its luxury brand Jaguar (offering comparable cars at prices, which are lower by up to 16%). By improving its economies of scale and catching up in terms of technology and design with the help of Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors can conquer saturated, sophisticated markets in the long term with innovative, high-efficient cars for the low- and mid-income customers. As the world becomes more and more global, not only in terms of cross-border trade but also regarding people’s attitude and global cultural awareness, we recommend both companies to join there forces and work together hands in hands. By analyzing and comparing both companies’ strategic management process, we became aware of similarities and differences as well as of numerous strengths and weaknesses across BMW and Tata. In order to successfully compete in global markets and meet increasing customer expectations, BMW and Tata should work on seizing global opportunities (i. . growing demand from emerging markets) together and eliminate individual weaknesses. One suggestion is to set up production facilities in India, so that BWM can benefit from low-cost labor, while supporting Tata in terms of safety issues and efficient design of engines.
